Bluesharks

We are The bluesharks

Bluesharks are a Leeds-based blues band playing a mixture of classic and modern blues.  Formed in the summer of 2012, the band features the three Wolstenholme brothers along with Laura Morris, James Lynch and Graeme Cuthbertson. They have played together in various local bands for years but this line-up is new and the first time all six have been in the same band. The Bluesharks feature a unique blend of three guitar sounds with Adam playing a Telecaster, Max a Les Paul and Graeme a Stratocaster.

The guitarists share lead and rhythm duties, weaving in and out with powerful solos and melodic riffs. The rock-solid rhythm section features Ian on drums and James on bass. Adam and Laura provide the vocals. The Bluesharks’ set features classics by Muddy Waters, BB King and the Stones mixed with less-obvious choices by artists including Primal Scream, The Doors, Robert Cray and Bruce Springsteen. Blended in are a growing numberof original songs inspired by some of the greats.

We booked the Bluesharks for our Annual Institute Dinner last November. This is a black tie event for over 400 people. The dance floor was quickly filled when the band started to play and everyone had a great time dancing away to the great mix of songs they played, they performed a wide variety from current to old classics. I would happily book the Bluesharks again for this event or any other corporate event I arranged.

Adam Wolstenholme Adam is our incredibly talented male lead singer and guitarist. An English teacher and former journalist, Adam can be credited for writing some of our most iconic songs including 'Shark Attack', 'Think Again' and 'Maxine'. His Lyrics are poetic and sharp and his performances energetic. Move over Mick Jagger!

Max Wolstenholme The youngest of the three talented Wolstenholme brothers, Max plays a Les Paul guitar and boy can he play it! Max also writes songs for the band such as the melodic 'I remember too well'.  Always smiling and always putting in an effortless performance, Max usually comes up with all our best and most creative ideas.

Laura Morris Laura is our female lead singer a.k.a 'The Lady Doctor (if you've come to one of our performances you'll know why!).  Her favourite songs to cover include Etta James 'I just wanna make love to you' and 'Limousine Blues' by Jan James.  However in the style and performance stakes her idol has to be Tina Turner.

Ian Wolstenholme Our drummer extraordinaire, Ian is the original and first eldest Wolstenholme brother and the experience shows. Ian drums with immense passion and pride and puts unbelievable energy and commitment into every performance. The duracell bunny has nothing on him.  He loves to play loud and can often be found edging up the volume whenever he can. And watch this space his eldest son is fast following in his drumming footsteps.

Graeme Cuthbertson An exceptional guitarist, Graeme plays a Stratocaster and his 'face melting solos' are something mere mortals can only dream of.  Not only this but Graeme is one of the loveliest, most unassuming people you will ever meet.  An english teacher by day (there's a band theme here somewhere), we can only assume his pupils consider him to be a suped up version of Dewey Finn from the film School of Rock.

James Lynch James is an incredible bass guitarist who likes to hide away at the back of the band doing what he does best.  An incredibly humble chap, James simply lets his music do the talking.  His dedication to learning new material is astounding and his knack of picking up new songs in a flash admirable.  James doesn't like the limelight but we say 'step out of the shadows' James and show off your talent!

band name

The band name 'The Bluesharks' originates from the cocktail of the same name and was chosen by guitarist Max after a Blue Sharks cocktail fueled drinking session on holiday in Zakynthos. Dangerous and intoxicating with the ability to "fu*k you up" a Blue Shark cocktail, just like the band, is not for the faint-hearted!

INGREDIENTS

• 3/4 oz - Gold Vodka
• 1/2 oz
- Tequila
• 1/2 oz - Blue Curacao

HOW TO MAKE

Combine vodka and tequila in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Add several dashes of blue curacao, and shake well. Strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass, and serve.

maxine

Well my heart was broken by a beautiful girl

When I was just 17

And I swore right then, I’d never fall in love again

Ten years later, thought I’d been tempted,

I’d always stayed cold and clean

But I was never tested till the day I met Maxine

She was standing on a corner

Looking to make a sale

Skinny and hungry, shaky and painfully pale

I said “Maxine, girl you better come with me

Gonna help you quit this scene

Gonna make you better

Gonna make you shiny and clean

Oh Maxine”

So my heart was captured by a dangerous girl

And now I’m 37

And I know by now I’ve got no place in heaven

Cause I’m addicted, I’m afflicted, I’ve cheated and stolen, seen

Things I should never have seen

All in the name of that crazy bitch Maxine

Now she’s standing on the corner

With the cold eating into her bones

And I’m shaking like a skeleton

Waiting for my girl to come home

I said “Maxine, girl you better come with me

Gonna help you quit this scene

Gonna make you better

Gonna make you shiny and clean

Oh Maxine”

Oh Maxine

You’re just a dirty dream

Never gonna quit the scene

Was gonna make you better

Gonna make you shiny and clean

Oh no Maxine

You’re just a dirty dream

Never gonna quit the scene

Was gonna make you better

Gonna make you shiny and clean

WORDS BY ADAM WOLSTENHOLME

I remember too well

I remember too well everything

I remember too well the pain it stings

You remember nothing that you did

Well I do

You were drinking too much, you broke our trust

You were looking at her, out of lust

I was watching it all, why can’t I fall

Out of love

Then I followed your car, from the bar

And I watched you walk in, from afar

And you stayed at her place, no saving grace

My heart breaks

You say it’s in the past don’t reminisce

A fling that didn’t last under the bridge

It happened years ago so just move on

But I don’t

I remember too well everything

I remember too well the pain it stings

I pretend to forgive, I can’t forget

No not yet

I remember too well everything

I remember too well the pain it stings

You remember nothing that you did

Well I do

I remember too well everything

I remember too well the pain it stings

I pretend to forgive, I can’t forget

No not yet

I remember too well ...

SHARK ATTACK

Shark attack! Shark attack!

Well I moved from San Francisco to the Eastern coast

Cause I heard that the women there were safer than most.

But there's one woman who could send me screaming back.

And she goes by the name of Miss Shark Attack.

Look out! I see her breaking the waves.

Her teeth are like razors and her eyes are black.

Look out, here comes Little Miss Shark Attack.

Shark attack! Shark attack!

I took my brother to a bar by the sea.

To check out the women, see what we could see.

I left early; he was gone for days.

Since he's come home he's never been the same.

Look out! We're gonna need a bigger boat, now.

There were teeth like daggers sticking out of his back.

He was latest victim of the Shark Attack.

She goes cruising off the Amity Strip.

Limbs like cigarettes hang from her lips.

You never see her coming till the surf turns red

And she's dragging you down to a watery bed.

Look out! I see her coming my way now.

Frozen with fear; there's no going back.

I have to submit to this shark attack.

WORDS BY ADAM WOLSTENHOLME

THINK AGAIN

Came home to find a monster on our bedroom floor.

The beast had two backs, and baby, one was yours.

Was such a scary sight; it's burned right into my brain.

I thought you were my friend. Woah, I'd better think again.

Ran out of the house and to the nearest bar.

To drink till I could think and I could feel no more.

But still I saw that thing. I heard you calling my name.

But if you think I'm coming home, girl you'd better think again.

Gonna call tomorrow and collect my things.

Two suits and one guitar and mother's violin.

Then sit down at a table and eat up this pain.

And if you think I'm coming home, you'd better think again.

Stumbled into church and who should I see there?

You were calling up to God and tearing out your hair.

It was such a sorry sight, my heart was breaking over again.

But if you think He'll bring me home, oh, you'd better think again.

Yeah, if you think I'm coming home, woah, you'd better think again.
